“Nothing to worry about, sweetheart. It’s not the red car.”
“Oh, that’s good. But it sounded awfully close.”
“It is. Sitting right outside.”
Laura felt a tingle of electricity run the length of her spine. “Laz, what kind of car is it?”
“A Buick, I think.”
Her arms felt like leaden weights; tingling leaden weights as she managed to ask. “What color?”
“Charcoal.”
“Oh, God!”
“Laura, what’s wrong?”
“The charcoal Buick! That was the car I saw after I got home the other day. It was sitting out there when I walked by it and I got chills just seeing it.”
“Could it be the same men?”
“I don’t have any idea but I didn’t like the look of the one I saw that day.”
“You saw one of them?”
“Yes. He was like one of those Middle Eastern guys you were talking about.”
Laz groaned. This was it. They had him pinned down. They’d have her, too, if he didn’t get her out of here and clear of what would happen when they attacked.
“We have to get you away from here, Laura. I think when you drive off they’ll concentrate on me. That’ll give you a chance to make a run for it. If you stay here with me, all bets are off.”
“I don’t want you to die. Oh, God! Laz, I’ve finally found you. I can’t drive away, knowing they’re going to kill you!”
“Calm down, Laura. They may try but better men than these have tried and failed. I can take care of myself, but I don’t want you in harm’s way. Now, get yourself dressed.”
She hurried into the bathroom and got ready as quickly as she could. By the time she was done, he was dressed and moving like a cat through the house.
“Let’s go to the garage. When I open the door, you back out of here and get the hell down the street, fast. I’ll wait them out. Go to work and stay there. I don’t think you’ll have anything to worry about once you’re away from me.”
“Except you. I’ll be sick wondering if you’re okay.”
“I’ll be fine, trust me. I know how to take care of myself. One thing though. I have to go to Washington to get some stuff done. I may not see you for several days and I won’t be able to contact you. I’ll call you as soon as it’s safe.”
She kissed his cheek. “Please be careful. I don’t want anything to happen to you. I love you!”
“We agree. Now get out of here. But remember I love you too, Princess.”
He crushed her to him, kissed her with a rush of emotion that nearly broke his heart, and pushed her toward the door. She went down to the garage with Laz following and started the car before punching the door opener. When it was open, she backed out and raced down the block.
He watched from the corner of the garage. When her car passed the gray one, it roared to life and took off after her. He stared mindlessly at the disappearing cars for a split second before it hit him full force.
What the bloody hell? They’re after her, not me! Why? And I’m on foot so I can’t help her. I’m helpless.
“Scheisse!”
